Choose to be Happy Today

The single clenched fist lifted and ready,
Or the open hand held out and waiting.
For we meet by one or the other.

Carl Sandburg:

Everyday is about the choices we make, what to wear, what to eat, how I should do my hair, the list goes on. When was the last time you make a choice to have a good attitude today?

Have you ever had a day when you’re dreading to see a co-worker, client, customer, boss, or neighbor? Have you ever taken a different route to avoid someone you did not want to see? I think we can think of many examples in our lives.

My suggestion today is, face the day with a new attitude! Think of this quote and how you would like to make the choice today to greet others with an open hand.

Please do not misunderstand me as I am not asking you to go out of your way to find all the people you dislike and begin making amends. I do encourage you to stay away from the negative forces in your life and hang out with the winners. I merely suggest when encountering people today make a choice to greet them kindly, and have a smile on your face.

I recently had this discussion with a group and I feel this worth repeating. We were discussing rude or mean people and what makes them this way. I asked if they had thought of the possibilities the other person may have had a horrible day and was normally a nice person. I reminded them of the story about the young woman who had cut off a driver was a single mom racing to get her sick child from daycare. Or maybe her father way dying and she was not handling it well. We just don’t what others go through but thinking in this context can help us from getting angry ourselves.

The point being this, we need to stop finding reasons to be a grouch and make a conscious decision to be a better person.

(see 9/20/07 conscious decision)

No matter what your circumstances, this is a good time to make this a priority in your life. Put down the fists and realize the world can be a great place and you might just want participate a bit more. Who knows you just might become one of the disgusting happy people who smile all the time. Well maybe not right away but for today is a wonderful start!

I challenge you, at the end of the day today look back and reflect. Was there anything you did differently? Did you make a difference? Remember it is your choice!
