Who Is St Nicholas???~~~~~~Susie Austin

Winston Churchill

We make a living by what we get,

but we make a life by what we give.

St Nicholas Day is today December 6. What is this day and who was St Nicholas? St Nicholas was born in 271AD and died sometime around December 6, 342 or 343AD He preformed many good deeds and was a friend to the poor and helpless. Myths say he calmed the raging seas, rescued desperate sailors, helped the poor and saved children.

The legend spread and became a European holiday regardless of religion. Many children leave their shoes in front of the fireplace and find it filled with candy and gifts the next morning. For others they may find stockings filled with good treats and treasures. Some have a bag with gifts left at their doorstep. I am sure the list can go on but for now I believe everyone understands the concept.

What I find interesting is this. St Nicholas was made a patron Saint of sailors and was known for helping the poor and helpless. What happened to that? How did it become a day for candy and gifts only? Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with the gift and candy part of it, but why can’t we bring the helping back into the day.

I think this is a wonderful idea and I am going to start today. I tell you and you tell someone else… it could just catch on one person at a time. My daughter and I have packed a bag of food to take to the food pantry. We have a food barrel at our office which makes it easy but almost any grocery store has barrels setting by the door. I suggest if you have children make this a part of St Nicholas day.  Make it a point to tell them who he was, he was a friend to the poor and in his honor we will help the poor ourselves. This can be a nice tradition to start in your family which can be carried on through generations.

This is a season of love and giving. I suggest we make a conscious effort to bring it back to the forefront, no matter how hectic it may get to keep the real spirit of the season in our hearts.
