Have Less Stress at Christmas~~~~ Susie Austin

Christmas waves a magic wand

over this world, and behold,

everything is softer and

more beautiful.”

Norman Vincent Peale quote

In theory this sounds wonderful but is it reality?  Overall I think yes the world does become softer this time of year but for today let’s look at our own little piece of it.

Does the busy and fast pace part of the season give you additional stress?  Do your kids have added stress as well?  The whole shopping experience can be extremely stressful. Kid’s tempers are short and their stress levels are just as high as ours. How do we effectively handle this to make the season just a little better?

The number one suggestion I can give you is attitude. Take some quiet time in the day and adjust your attitude to where you want to be. Prepare your attitude before you go shopping and make it a point to have fun.

I happen to have four children that range in age from eight to nineteen with three being teenagers. Our goal this season as a family is to stay calm and when one of us get stressed, the others stay calm and try to help the person having the issue. If you do not have teenagers you probably do not understand what a lofty goal this is as the drama level is usually quite high.

Another tip I can offer is to have a family word. We heard a version of this in a sermon awhile back and my son has kept it alive. He has chosen the word “Woosah” I believe it is from a movie but when things get loud and on the verge of being out of control he will yell this word and it seems to have an almost immediate reaction.  It reminds us all to calm down and it trust me it does work.

I had the privilege of attending a Candle Light concert last night in which two of my children were singing. It was beautiful and the music has such a wonderful effect on everyone. There are many high school and church concerts this time of year, I suggest attending some of them, there is no cost and it is a wonderful way to spend an evening.

It is within our power to have a stressfree holiday season, the overall result will be even more than you could expect.

May peace and love be with you today and always.
