Good Listening~~~Susie Austin

The most basic of all human needs

is the need to understand

and be understood.

The best way to understand people

is to listen to them.

           Ralph Nichols

Have you ever been in a situation where you were very excited to say something you felt quite important and you could not get the opportunity to speak? It is quite frustrating isn’t to say the least.

Today I would like to focus on being a good listener. Good listening skills help us to get along with others, be more effective at our workplace and are better in relationships.

In order to listen we must be able to hear, however in order to honestly listen we have to pay attention to what is being said.  We have to make an effort to hear what is being said. This can be very difficult at times especially in these times of fast pace and multi everything. How many of us are guilty of talking on the phone checking email, cleaning your desk and a multitude of other tasks. The key here is to stop, focus and have respect for the other person by giving him or her full attention.

How can you become a better listener? I have found when I slow myself down it helps. I am usually never at a loss for words and it can be difficult at times to resist the urge to take over the conversation.  I respect the person whom I am taking to. They deserve my attention If I am slow to speak I am allowing the person the time needed process what is they want to say. I find using eye contact and being attentive helps to actively listen. Using a saying like; that’s true, okay, that makes sense, shows you are following what they are saying and keeps you focused.

Active listening takes practice and is a learned skill today I encourage you to consider these tips to become a better listener. I remember years ago someone told me a little secret. He said if you want people to like you listen to everything they say. It doesn’t really matter what you say as long as you listen to them.

By taking the time to hear people, and learning good listening skills you will be a better friend, relationships will improve, and you will become a better person.

  1. There is a reason god gave us two ears and one mouth. It is so we can listen twice as much as we speak. There is no greater learning tool than listening. It is something you should practice everyday – until you can become an expert!

  2. These are some really good suggestions, Susie. Thanks!
