Earth Day April 22~~~Susie Austin

“There is hope if people will begin

to awaken that spiritual part of themselves,

that heartfelt knowledge that

we are caretakers of this planet.”

    ~Brooke Medicine Eagle

Today is Earth Day, I have been reading up a bit on the history of this day.

The story goes that Earth Day was conceived when Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin visited Santa Barbara right after a terrible oil spill off the coast in 1969. He was so angered by what he saw he went back to Washington and passed a bill with April 22 being a national day to celebrate the earth. In 1969 Senator Nelson announced at a conference in Seattle Washington that in the spring of 1970 there would be a grassroots demonstration on the environment. And so it began, every year on April 22 marks the anniversary of the birth of the environmental movement. According to Wikipeida over 20 million people participated in Earth Day that year and now is observed by over 500 million in 175 countries.

What are you doing to help our earth? Many feel their efforts are to small to be significant, however they are not! If everyone does small things such as conserving energy, for which there are many ways, carpool, recycle, plant trees, the list could go on as there are countless ways we all can contribute to a healthy environment.

We are all stewards of this earth and we need to take actions to be able to hand over this beautiful place to our children and our children’s children.

Today I suggest go for a walk and see the beauty that surrounds you. The beauty of the earth was given to us to enjoy, remember to do what you can to assure those who follow us are able to enjoy this same beauty.
