Are You Listening?~~~Susie Austin

“Wisdom is the reward for a

lifetime of listening …

when you’d have preferred to talk.”

Reading, writing, speaking and listening are the basic forms of communication. Think of all the hours you spend doing one of these in a day. The ability to do them well is extremely important if you want to be effective in communication. We spend years learning how to read and write, speak but do you know how to listen? I feel this is one of the most difficult things to learn as there has been relatively little training in this area.

Listening with your eyes as well as your ears is probably the most important factor in listening. Pay attention to the other person and try not to get sidetracked or let your mind wander. Forget about other distractions such as the telephone or other conversations. Be patient; listen as though you have plenty of time.

I have found I have become a better listener by having an awareness and respect for the other person and their needs. We know how it feels when we are not being listened to and this is what we should remember when listening to others.

Be a good friend, be a good person, be a good listener and your life will be more fulfilling.
