Are You Listening?~~~Susie Austin

“Wisdom is the reward

 you get for a lifetime

of listening when you’d

 have preferred to talk.”

Doug Larson

We life in a noisy world full of distractions and at times listening can be very difficult. We are all subject to noise pollution, noise we don’t necessarily want to hear, in malls, neighbors, TV sets and it’s difficult to hear when all these distractions get in the way, or possibly we don’t feel like listening. Respect is not just a matter of seeing, it is also about hearing, and it doesn’t exist without listening.

How many times have you been listening to someone speak and the whole time were planning what you were going to say? I use a technique with my family called “Family meetings” My children are not too thrilled about them, however they are quite effective. I begin by discussing the ground rules and start with a positive and motivating talk. Mostly it is about the importance of family and how much we love each other. One person can talk at a time; no one can interrupt as everyone gets a chance to speak. This allows this person to say anything that is bothering them without anger, and being on the defensive. No arguing is allowed and usually we end with finding solutions to problems and being more aware of how the others feel. This can be used in any setting, family, office, where ever needed.

Listening is a form of respect, it requires the ability to hear and feel what others are saying. Listening can be an amazing adventure as everyone has a wonderful story and usually are more than willing to tell it.

  1. This is so perfectly suited for your topic today (a world of noise and distractions). I found this quote recently:
Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”
    I wish you peace!
